Brain Fingerprint®: a New Instrument for Scientific Ufology

A new instrument which is able to determine with extreme certainty if in a person’s memory there is or “not” fixed information is undoubtedly the one that could give modern ufology a further quality leap, and make it part of scientific research.

According to the latest studies, this instrument seems to coincide with the revolutionary Brain Fingerprint® [Note A] (www.brainfingerprint.com) [1]. It is 
a testing system, that looks like a mixture of hardware devices, software programs, algorithms and procedures, planned with the purpose of recording the different electro-physiological manifestations appearing during the brain activity, and able to measure them in a not-invasive way through the MERA (Multifaceted Electroencephalographic Response Analysis), [1], and obtain from these some information useful to determine pre-existing memories. 

Brain Fingerprint was ideated and developed by Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell, Neuroscience Ph.D. at the University of Illinois [6], and by his team composed of scientists and technicians (S.S. Smith, D.C. Richardson, R.S. Hernandez, P. Rapp and W.G. Iacono among the others) after twenty years researches, tests and scientific publications. Starting from the research on the measurable brain response known as P300, which started in the 70es and has been widely accepted in several scientific fields such as psycho-physiology, the researchers have discovered a wider brain response called MERMER® [Note 1] (Memory and Encoding Related Multifaceted Electroencephalographic Response) [1], that has increased the accuracy of the results obtained by the test by EEG/P300 [1]; we better deal with this topic, from a technical and scientific point of view, in a future article.

We have to point out that with the introduction of MERMER within the different analysis algorithms of the brain waves, the results’ exactness obtained with the Brain Fingerprint test has been verified in all the tested cases, and it has been carried out on more than 200 different subjects [7]. As an example of these cases is a study carried out on a group of people, among them some FBI agents, which aimed at measuring the brain response given on words and sentences that only these agents knew [8].

In order to solve any possible doubt on the scientifical character and seriousness of the topic, all the results have been published in the most authoritative scientific peer-reviewed journals of this field, or better with a scientific referee-based approach, as for example: “Psychophysiology” (www.journals.cambridge.org/journal_Psychophysiology), “Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology” (www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/601528/description), “Physical Review E” (http://pre.aps.org) and “Journal of Forensic Sciences” (http://journalsip.astm.org/jofs). Moreover there have been several conferences, congresses and meetings in which the different aspects of this technology were presented and discussed; among the most important ones it seems correct to quote the several annual meetings of “Society for Psychophysiological Research” 
annual meetings (www.wlu.edu/~spr) [9].

From this point of view, it is fundamental to underline the fact that the studies on Brain Fingerprint technology have brought about the correct determination of every single tested case, when the information provided by the tests was sufficient to obtain a certain response (in more than 90% of the cases).

These researches are now carried on in the Brain Fingerprint Laboratories Inc., a private company founded in 2003 by Dr. Farwell in Fairfield, Iowa, which then moved to the Washington University Technology Centre, located in Seattle, WA, in order to use this kind of technology on a wider scale and in different fields.

From the mediatic point of view this argument has had a large resonance after the test results given by Brain Fingerprint and EEG/P300, carried out on the convict Mr.Terry Harrington (See Figure 1), were admitted as evidence by the US District Court in march 2002 [10]. 

In 1977 Mr.Harrington, who was seventeen at that time, was accused of the homicide of the retired police captain Mr.John Schweer, and, in spite of a very convincing alibi and various witnesses in his favour, in 1978 he was condemned to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court of the State of Iowa, with a virdict mainly based on the witness of Mr.Kevin Huges, a sixteen year-old boy. In 2000 Dr. Farwell carried out the Brain Fingerprint test on him, and the results showed that what was stored in Mr.Harrington’s mind did not correspond to the crime scene but to his alibi [11]. Fundamental, at this point, was the sentence of District Judge Hon.Timothy O’Grady, in March 2001, who stated that Brain Fingerprint test met the Legal Daubert Standard for the admissibility in court as scientific evidence [12]. After the case reopening on 26 February 2003 [13], after more than 25 years of detection, since October 2003 Mr.Harrington has been a free man [14].

This test, that will be analyzed in the course of this article, simply measures the brain waves produced by the subject’s brain, and detected by the sensors placed within the EEG/P300, as a response to the informative stimulus proposed to the subject through particular devices and software programs. These waves are detected in a second’s fraction after the information is presented, within a very precise 300ms time lapse (from which the name P300) and 800 to 1500 ms time lapse, before the subject could be able to give an intentionally wrong response, or to control it in some way. It is a good thing to remember that everything happened independently from the subject’s emotivity and will.

In order to consider the procedure followed by the Brain Fingerprint test in a deeper way, it is possible to notice that the information sequence could be 
formed by images, sounds, words or sentences, and it is presented to the subject, under the control of fixed software algorithm, maintaining each of 
them at an interval of a fraction of a second. While building this sequence we have to remember that the information could be divided into three distinct 
groups [15], each with an own characteristic and functionality: 

- Information defined "Target”, about 15 %,

- Information defined "Irrelevant", about 70 %,

- Information defined "Probes", about 15 %.

These informative stimuli are given to the subject that is instructed to push a particular button as answer to the information he considers target, or known, and another button as answer to the other fully unknown stimulus. 

"Target” consist therefore of general information known by the suspect, they will act as a reference base of the cerebral response we will obtain for the information known as significant for the suspect within the crime contest (continue line in the two graphics in Figure 2 and 3). These stimuli, being known, will provoke a specific MERMER event. 

Most of the stimuli do not belong to the “Target” category, they are unknown and are not related to the investigated situation, but they will be linked to other life situations. They will belong to the “Irrilevant” category. It is important to notice that these stimuli do not provoke a MERMER event and, for this reason, they build up a reference point for the brain response to information known as to be irrilevant for the suspect within the crime contest (dotted line in the two graphics in Figure 2 and 3). 
 
There are, however, some stimuli within the “Non Target” cathegory, that are relevant for the situation under investigation. These stimuli, that can provoke or not a MERMER event, will fall into the “Probes” category and they are fundamental for the success of the test (bold line in the two graphics in Figure 2 and 3).

At this point it is easy to see how for a subject that has the knowledge of the investigated situation, crime scene or other in advance, the “Probes” information will be the same as the ones of the knowledge already acquired, thus provoking a MERMER event (as shown in the graphic in Figure 2); this kind of brain wave response will show the presence of the information related to the investigated situation, stored in some area of the subject’s mind.

On the other hand a subject that lacks this knowledge, will not provoke a MERMER event, and so the “Probes” information will not be separated from the ”Irrilevant” ones (as shown in the graphic in Figure 3); the result will be absence of relevant information.  

This research has been mainly carried out in the legal spheres, which has been made possible by a technique that detects with high certainty range the difference between the life situation of someone who has commited the crime, and someone who has not: the former has actually stored the details of the committed crime in some corner of his memory, while the latter does not. This presence or absence of specific information is what is scientifically detected by the test in question, or in a deeper way, it is what can be measured by the Brain Fingerprint, thanks to the headband called EEG/P300, equipped with the EEG sensors, which detect the presence or absence of the P300 and MERMER brain responses. 

In order to support the fact that the legal field is, in this moment, the most important branch where the Brain Fingerprint researches are concentrated, we have to show that in the United States of America about 5000 persons, some of whom are potentially innocent, are in jail with a death sentence on their heads. Hundreds of thousands of persons are in this moment expiating, from life imprisonment to more than 10 years of detention, and, in general, more that 10 million people are incriminated every year [16]. The possibility of improving the certainty range and justice in such cases as the Harrington one, where maybe it is not possible to have fingerprints or DNA as reperts, could be very important for future justice.

However this specific test can be extremely useful in a wider range of cases which strongly differe from each other: 
 
- In the investigation of terrorist activities, where DNA or fingerprints are not available, it is possible to take advantage of the fact that the person who plans and/or executes the crime, or even he/she who helps in some way these criminals, has surely these information stored in his mind; in this way terrorists can be identified even before they carry out attentats, with an improvement in everyone’s security, and above all for the innocent persons that are mistaken for terrorists [17],
 
- In the medical research and especially in the geriatrich field, as Alzheimer: thanks to this kind of test, it is possible to obtain a diagnosis in an easier and cheaper way which is not invasive in the disease progress, and a more precise measurement of the effectiveness of the different treatments and progresses in the course of the time [18],
 
- In the insurance field, we could reduce the numbers of frauds, determining if a person has or not the knowledge of fraud acts,
 
- In support to computer science police: this kind of tests could help to determine if a person has committed a computer crime or not, given that, in some cases, there is neither a physical evidence of the event nor a possibility to have some witnesses [19].
 
Besides an application is such important and serious fields as the one mentioned above, there could also be and improvement in the abduction research field (i.e. hypothetical kidnapping carried out by aliens, entities and/or military people). Frequently we forget that the persons, who think or are persuaded to be subject to the abduction phenomena often live their status in a negative way.

Undoubtedly it is extremely important to state with absolute certainty if a person, that thinks or has the sensation to be abducted, has the “real memory” of this lived experience or not, and so whether this event, that he thinks to be real, is born of his mind or not. It is a utopia to think that? We will see.

World Society: from the Globalisation Theory to the Extraterrestrialism [1] - pag.1

GLOBALIZATION
It has to be seen as the process by which markets and production in the different countries become always more dipendent among them because of the exchange of goods and services trend (OECD), but this requires also a substantial change of the relations between the parts with implications in each field of social, political and cultural life, involving the system control processes themselves – World [2].
Social exchange, communication, information and word, as spread of the new culture tending to homogeneity so to globalization.
The more the means of communication restrict themselves and become “abstract” compared to the bearer or to their territory of registration, the more the field of action and the quantity of subjects achievable and involved in a same system of relations.
The importance of the technological shift: foundation for the intensification of streams of exchange. It allows the redoubling of places of physical presence (virtual realities) and economic. It causes an alteration of the concepts place/time (with the use of computer network), it leads to a change of identities and belongings. It produces a transformation of the places and themes of the social clash and adumbrates a variation and a need of a new definition aware of the principles on which the social bond develops. 

GLOBALIZATION AS EPOCH-MAKING TRANSFORMATION
Psychological, economic, political, social, cultural and anthropological facetings. Informative system and metro-political complex owing to the almightiness of absolute speed of electromagnetic waves which spread the different signals [3]. From “Cosmopolis” to “Omnipolis”[4]
A logic on man evolution: From the pre-scientific culture (500 years) to the scientific, pre-industrial and industrial one (150 years). Change in life, changing in observing the world around us.
Pre-scientific technique means basic structure to catch the essential to allow us to live and evolve, in compliance with the logics which nature enforces to industrial society which produces consumables, capital and means of production, equalizing and spreading welfare through a certain homogeneity in human societies, to the post-industrial society which mainly produces knowledge, programming capability and systems management [5]. From world competition to a power based on the territories and the access to raw materials and cheap manpower, to information supremacy[6].

The analysis of the variation of the economic-political complex, can be useful to define an explanation which leads to the logic of the concept of Extraterrestrial [7]. This analysis refers to the instances of:
a) - Intensification and globalization of communication flows through sophisticated technologies. So global communication becomes more homogeneous, fast and standardized, it encourages the need of Extraterrestrial expansion.
b) - Delocalization. Organization of the system Enterprise and of the economic system, through the computer network and not more with the aid of centralized models.
c) - Internationalization of the markets
d) - Loss of fiscal revenues and private benefits, and increase of unemployment/tensions on the market.
e) - Culture and formation addressed/oriented towards the international circuit (Global Mind Set)

GLOBALIZATION AND SHARING: THE IMPORTANCE OF POLITICS AND THE ECOLOGICAL EMERGENCY.
Political instruments not appropriate to new social, economic and world needs. Local interests sometimes in conflict with the global ones. Reason of the conflict/sharing between private material goods and public ones on a world scale. From the space of places (area of productive settlement) to the space of the flows (distribution of Knowledge and of cognition). 

TIME SPACE AND MATERIAL
Analyzing the transformation of the territorial descriptions of the settlings, Globalization entails a different articulation of space/time relation as well.
The chance to work in real time, effaces largely the peculiarities and the importance of real space.
The changes related to an always more spread and cheap use of information and knowledge, together with the use of advanced communication technologies, are a decisive factor in the upheavals which identify the globalization era, where the relation among humans an things bear on an extraordinary computer and epistemic structure.
The dematerialization of goods and services can be seen as a wonder related with the most important innovations in the field of microelectronics, robotics, automation and computer science; as well as in the sphere of midget technologies created through the crossing among chemistry, physics and material science[9].
From the criteria of the: “proximity” which bound the rules of urban settlings in the industrial period, the mobility and flexibility criterion regulates all the new displacements of capitals, goods, power – work and necessarily the relations between economy and research change, being useful regarding the new purposes of research and development. So it is necessarily binding an Extraterrestrial vision which identifies itself in a new research more flexible and separated from mainly terrestrial methods. 

POSSIBLE DIFFICULTIES ON EXTRATERRESTRIAL GLOBALIZATION 
Delays and contradictions in theoretical globalization lead to a linear tendency of the evolution to a logical extraterrestrial identification. On one side they can be identified, as regards the spread of life and consumer styles in places culturally very different; on the other side, the recrudescence of extremisms and claimings of authenticity (regional, religious, ethnic), sometimes worsen by the resort to violent ways of identity declaration which intimate a difficult reassembling of global and local instances of social regulation [10].
The most evident paradox of globalization process with extraterrestrial logic, identifies itself in the particular sequence of events which establishes itself between global and local, emphasized because of their conflict and their complementarity.
The temporal homogeneity in a planet at this point submissive to the “tyranny of real time”, can both fall in value the local time and meaning of the specific and direct activities, and revalue them exactly for their concrete connotations. The same concepts of local and global have to be seen again because they change the basis of belonging.
Examples of local communities with a global nature, that is to say social groups introduced in a net according to the tastes, common experiences or specific interests. ( Ex. Chess players, astronomers etc.)
Also on the plan of behaviors and of social relations, globalization follows an unavoidable change which marks an epoch making passage. The appearance of relations based on an inorganic apparatus and on virtual realities [11] leads to effects of dissemination in places and circumstances far from the ones in which the subject physically is.
Sense dissemination: words and information previously linked to a support (physical body, text, territory) according to a plan with a sense in time and space unique, are now released and virtualized in potential and unlike combinations (virtual reality and ipertexts). 
So it exist a privacy socio-psycho-behavioral-existential between what we call imaginary and what we call real [12].
Not only we have the scission between the sense and the physical boundaries of each communicative act (loss of the context and of the subject), but it appears the logic of the “Crossing of the mirror”. It does not limit itself to send us the image of ourselves, but it becomes our real image. One becomes the other and their way becomes an only one. So the sense of real, science-fiction, becomes more and more important in shape and weight toward an extraterrestrial approach that can lead to a continuation of new evolutions and new existential choices: the way of man to the discovery of new worlds, models comparables to an approach different from the anthrop-centrist one [13]. 

ANALYSIS OF THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PHENOMENONS, THEIR INTERCONNECTIONS AND POSSIBLE TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE CURRENT STAGE OF WORLD DEVELOPMENT.
The power, the lack of information and the cover-up are strong disturbs in the change of logic and evolution of the democratic thought at a level of global information.
The evolution has to be pursued through a culture in which the promotion of internal variety, of a society and of the self fulfillment of each one could fully combine with the principle of the restriction of powers, so continuous intervention are needed to limit the power of dominant groups and to defend the one of most weak, checking in this way the process of tribalization of the countries and leading human society to the model of social operating which will open the way to extraterrestrial contacts, which however are not possible without evolution of the democratic system – behavioral international.

THE NEED TO CIVILIZE THE WORLD [15]
Globalization takes with itself the corollary of universalization and of the possibility of communication of humanity fragments which ignored each other, but it contains as well elements of dominion and death predation.
This logic can also be read as: good Extraterrestialism and bad E. The first one leads anyway man to extraterrestrial evolution. The second one is suffered from humanity (as it is attacked and destroyed by hostile and superior beings), or it is not useful or it does not exist.

c) - PUSH OF THE POLITICAL MOVERS LINKED TO THE CONFLICTS OF DOMINION

In this line of reading we add the identity and the creative power which is the field of human relations, in the concrete affectivity of social subjects, in the ideologies and in the relation between real and imaginary [16]. 

Scientific discoveries on cosmos origin and its characteristics, on the self-organizational skills of the living being, together with the loss of the illusions (religious and ideological), and with the awareness of the contemporary presence of life and death on each living wonder, have explained risks and threats which rest on the whole humanity. Meanwhile there are crisis and immoderate instances evident on a world scale (World market, demographic boom, ecologic Risk). The malaise (feel bad about society), has to be fought, redefining and re-orienting our terrestrial aims through a difficult conceptual building which has to restore the different aspects of cognition, and in the meantime has to include again ethical, political and anthropological contents of the thought and of the action in a strategy aiming at the exit from planetary agony. This strategy has to verge to a thought reform based on the need to exceed the disciplinary and technical compartmenlizations, and to aim to the reassembling of everything and to the contextualisation of each wonder (Think the context and the complex). [17]
The epistemology of the complexity includes the principle of the construction of reality intended as the idea we have about it, about ecology of action (each action escapes from the intention of the people who makes it in the same moment in which it is done), and the principle of the political ecology.
The chance – impossible to globally civilize the Earth, is included in the need of transformation of mental, social, economical and national structures.
The real Realism, as Morin [18] says, is the one that considering all the likelihoods and unlikelihoods, is based on the uncertainty of the real.

THE “GOSPEL OF PERDITION”[19]

Morin suggests us some simple but disarming considerations:
Our own it’s a small planet lost in space and the cosmos itself is voted to perdition. The living beings who are on it have been thrown in life without asking it to happen and they will die without knowing why. They live between the nothing from which they emerge and the nothing in which they are voted. Everything that has a value for us, life, beauty, love, truth, are “emergencies” that rise from the organizational qualities of the matter, of ideas, of shapes. It’s a question of ephemeral emergencies which suppose organizations of organizations, of unprecedented and unlikely chances, which run mortal risks. What for us is fundamental does not have foundation.
Right from the conscience of the groundlessness of each value, from the certainty of the finitism, it is necessary to restart to assert the reasons of life and the need to cultivate the small planet where everybody lives positive experiences fundamental of his existence. Morin says: “If there is a gospel, that is to say a good news, it has to come from a bad one. We are lost but we have a roof, a home, a homeland. The small planet where life has created its garden, where humans have made their hearth, where at this point humanity has to recognize his common house. It’s not the promised earth, it is not the terrestrial paradise. It is our homeland, the place of our community of destiny of terrestrial life and death. We have to cultivate our terrestrial garden, that is to say civilize Earth.”

So from the consciousness of all human beings about being part of the same community of destiny, about sharing the same principle of human identity as multiple identity, about being lost in the cosmos, about not being allowed to appeal to any eternal salvation, about running the risks created by the humanity itself, can or has to become the innovative push to move forward the process of planetary civilization.
This is the sense the most fundamental of the origin for an internal Extraterrestrialism strong and determinate to the consciousness and the conquest of man of what there is out of his small planet.

CONCLUSIONS 

Having an Extraterrestrial nature, means to look up and know that Earth is only a small grain in the Universe, where man had to embark on a road to a future in which you cannot see a real end.

The evolution of terrestrial society in terms of globalization, in conclusion is leading, through the innovation of the computer system general and global, to an increase which is going to a culture of welfare and of new technological innovations which are going to wedge in the traditional anthropological and folksy culture, kept as differentiation of its existential visions, which is becoming a concrete reality in generalized and mediate behaviors in each geographical area of the globe.
This evolution leads to a deep transformation as for the individual behaviors between single individuals, in a way that it becomes at this time impossible to relegate traditions, the privileges of caste and so on, in social fields controlled and homogeneous. But this leads, necessarily, to a dynamic evolution from the inside, of the previous conceptions. In terms of transformation of social behaviors, there is a cultural homogeneity that develops because of the new and huge potentialities of information technology, but the challenge is not to renounce to the roots or better, don’t forget those traditions and those cultures defined with approximation sectional, which have been the means of junction of the cultural homogeneous evolution which is about to appear and which will result in the acceptance of a wider ethnic/global patrimony. On this bases even if the power intended as operation of the essential resources and of the fundamental themes of economic and political human world society will always compulsory be managed by individuals that in any case will be obliged to have an ethic and a concept of democracy which runs away from the temptation of using oligarchic logics and of dominion, it is logic to think that the extraterrestrial thought could evolve and be wedged in the actions and objectives of the exponents and citizens of the terrestrial community for a future, we hope, not to far, which we hope heralding of new knowledge and new opportunities for human community, busy in the consciousness and in the acquisition of new information and new means of to know more and more and to interfere in a way more and more complete in the system in which is immersed from since the year dot, and that for the moment we have been used to call it Cosmos.

Gruppo Camelot: One of the Most Active and Dynamic Ufologic Groups in Italy - pag.2

The “Gruppo Camelot” (Camelot Group: www.gruppocamelot.too.it ) is a team of researchers constituted years ago, that is grown step by step, becoming a certainty in the Italian ufology world.
Presidents, founders and members of several national and international associations (Centro Ricerche Leonardi da Vinci, Gruppo HWH22, Fondazione Sentinel Italia, Gruppo Lunaria OVNI, Libero Arbitrio and so on), ufologists well-known in Italy and abroad and independent researchers form a heterogeneous group, where different multi-disciplinary approaches and interpretative current are not only well represented, but they constitute the main strength of this Group.
There are not one or more chiefs, or a headquarter, but all the different persons co-operate and collaborate between them, as with external collaborators (scientists, professors, researchers, engineers, etc....), with a common purpose: the research of the truth and of the correct divulgation.

Several are the initiatives of the Gruppo Camelot: the study of the unpublished casuistry, joined investigations in field, new kind of technical-scientific analysis, organization of important conferences and debates, an inexhaustible web activity, consolidate relations with media, all with the support of forum ( www.forumfree.net/?c=10836 ), mailing lists ( groups.yahoo.com/group/camelotlist ), websites, and a not-periodic ufologic magazine, Camelot Chronicles ( www.camelotchronicles.com ).
